Painters apply paint, varnish, wallpaper and other finishes to protect, maintain and decorate surfaces of buildings and structures. Painters (Visual Arts), Vehicle Painters and Industrial Spraypainters are excluded from this unit group.

- Apply decorative or textured finishes or coverings
- Apply material to fill gaps in surfaces
- Apply paint
- Apply sealants or other protective coatings and finishes
- Clean surfaces before commencing work
- Prepare surfaces for finishing
- Protect structures, objects or surfaces near work areas to avoid damage or contamination
- Review designs, blueprints, specifications, diagrams, work orders or other documentation to determine work requirements
- Smooth surfaces of objects, structures, or equipment

- Graphics or photo imaging software
What their interests are:
- Business, Management And Sales – they enjoy meeting people, leading and talking with others.
- Outdoors – they enjoy working outside. This could include growing things and caring for animals.
- Practical – they enjoy working with equipment, operating machinery and fixing things.

Education and qualifications
Painting Trades Worker – Skill level 3
Occupations at Skill Level 3 have a level of skill commensurate with one of the following:
- AQF Certificate IV or
- AQF Certificate III including at least two years of onthejob training
At least three years of relevant experience many substitute for the formal qualifications listed above.
