Schools selected at random for short notice inspections
NESA’s risk-based approach to regulation includes the selection of schools at random for a short notice inspection. Learn more about this program.
Selection of schools
The selection of schools at random for a short notice inspection involves schools in all sectors. The program assesses whether schools are complying with the requirements, as detailed in the:
- government schools – NSW Registration Process for the Government Schooling System Manual
- individual non-government schools – NSW Registered and Accredited Individual Non-government Schools Manual
- systemic non-government schools – NSW Registration Systems and Member Non-government Schools Manual.
The selection of schools considers the range of schools across NSW and within each sector.
Notification and timing
Inspections occur from Week 5, Term 1 to the end of Term 3.
If selected, an Inspector will contact the school’s principal at least 10 calendar days before the inspection.
For government and systemic non-government schools, the Inspector will notify the nominated Department or proprietor representative before contacting the principal.
Focus requirements
NESA’s program of inspecting schools selected randomly focuses on requirements that have importance for student learning and wellbeing. These focus requirements remain in place each year and form the basis of the program.
A short notice inspection will be conducted in relation to:
- 2 curriculum requirements and
- 2 non-curriculum requirements.
Annually, a subset of the evidence of compliance is identified from each of the focus requirements.
If selected for a short notice inspection, the Inspector will identify which 2 curriculum requirements and 2 non-curriculum requirements are the focus for the school’s inspection.
The inspection details will be confirmed in writing with the school.
Curriculum requirements for 2025
‘Curriculum – alignment’ and one other curriculum requirement will be reviewed.

Findings and outcomes
The process for delivering and acting on findings follows these steps.
Report is prepared by the Inspector
An Inspector will prepare a report identifying the findings in relation to the school’s compliance.
Report is provided to the school
The school’s principal and proprietor representative will be provided with a copy of the report before it is considered by the NESA Registration and Accreditation Committee.
If compliance concerns are identified
At a non-government school - where compliance concerns are identified at a non-government school, NESA will request the school provides evidence of addressing the concerns. An Inspector may request additional evidence in relation to a broader range of requirements and the school may be subject to further inspection.
At a government school - where a random inspection identifies compliance concerns at a government school, NESA will request the Department provides evidence of addressing the concerns.
