For the first time in NSW, parents will be able to look up their child’s teacher to check they are qualified, have a working with children check and meet mandatory professional standards.
The register of teachers will be updated in real-time, assuring parents and carers that each and every one of the state’s 160,000 teachers are meeting the tough requirements to teach in NSW.
Paul Martin, Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) said that it is vital that parents and carers know their child is being taught by teachers who meet the state’s robust accreditation and child protection standards.
“I have no doubt that NSW teachers are among the best in Australia so it makes sense for parents to be able to complete a quick online check that their child’s teacher has met a rigorous set of professional standards,” Mr Martin said.
“When a teacher's accreditation is revoked or suspended, they are prohibited from being employed as a teacher in NSW school or early childhood service and removed from the Register,”
The Register is one of a number of teacher accreditation reforms underway in NSW to strengthen child protection measures in all education settings, streamline the teacher accreditation process and reduce the administrative burden on teachers.
“The reform program and initiatives, such as the new Register, will make the teaching profession stronger and provide families with assurance that their child is safe at school.”
The Public Register of Teachers will go live on the NESA website on 30 June 2022.
