Originally from Walarawang, northwest of Lithgow, Danell began her career in a reputable graduate program on the Central Coast. After completing this program in 1995, she pursued her midwifery training at Nepean Hospital, gaining valuable experience across various departments, including theatre, emergency, inpatient units, and ambulatory care.
"When I started my nursing journey, I knew I wanted a diverse range of experiences. I sought out opportunities that would challenge me and allow me to grow, knowing I would eventually bring those skills back to my community in Lithgow."
Danell's path into management was not initially planned, but her leadership skills quickly became evident. She took on roles such as Nurse Unit Manager before stepping into the Acting Director role 18 months ago.
"I embraced management with a desire to support my team and improve our processes. It was a learning curve, but I quickly realised that my passion for patient care, combined with the incredible support from the dedicated staff and community at Lithgow Hospital, made all the difference."
Throughout her tenure at Lithgow Hospital, Danell has established the antenatal clinic and the Safe Start program, an initiative designed to enhance the safety and wellbeing of newborns and their families during the crucial early days after birth.
Danell’s hands-on approach and strong community connections foster a collaborative environment at the hospital. Passionate about nurturing talent, she encourages her staff to explore different departments and specialties.
“It’s important for our new health care workers to have diverse experiences to keep them engaged and empowered."
Looking ahead, Danell is focused on improving services for dementia and delirium care, enhancing telehealth options, and expanding the ambulatory care unit at Lithgow Hospital.
Her commitment remains steadfast in ensuring that staff, patients, and the local community feel supported and have access to a nurturing health care environment.
