Hospital, providing moments of connection to nature, delight and playfulness. The internal void of the hospital is perceived by artist, Jade Oakley as a metaphor for the Blue Mountains landscape. The towering facades of the building are the vertiginous sandstone cliffs of the local escarpment, and the sheltered courtyard represents a pocket rainforest, surrounded by cliffs, planted with tree ferns and native rainforest species.
Sunrise and sunset punctuate our days. The lighting for the Shine artwork reflects this celestial phenomenon by programming a rich, coloured glow at sunrise and sunset. This gives patients and staff a connection to the outside world and provides a beautiful event to anticipate twice a day. At sunrise the sculpture is lit with golden light, and at sunset the sculpture is illuminated by a rosy radiance, reflecting soft, warm light into the interior of the hospital.
