Assertive Outreach
Assertive Outreach is an evidence-based practice to solve street homelessness. Specialist caseworkers and health professionals connect with and help people experiencing homelessness.
Homes NSW specialist caseworkers, and health professionals go on patrols to connect with people experiencing homelessness and help them find stable, long-term housing.
Since March 2017, the NSW Government has been working in partnership with the NGO sector to conduct Assertive Outreach Street patrols in inner-Sydney.
These teams have helped many people experiencing street homelessness find pathways to long-term housing
In 2019, the Department of Communities and Justice and its partners expanded these services to the Tweed and Newcastle districts, and this was followed by further expansion to Eurobodalla in 2022 and Byron Shire in 2024. In other areas across NSW, Homes NSW and Community Housing Providers partner with local services to engage and support people sleeping rough.
