AIR Support

Delivering health care brings many emotional demands and people working in health usually manage the impact of stressful events well, but sometimes they need assistance.

All high-risk industries should have a well-planned integrated and tailored peer support program for their employees. That's where air support can help, an acute incident is any event that causes a significant reaction which is likely to impact staff wellbeing.

Continued exposure to people in crisis has the potential to produce unhelpful outcomes for

healthcare workers. Particularly when an appropriate supportive response is not available soon after.

AIR delegates provide an empathetic listening ear, provide one-to-one psychological first aid, identify colleagues at risk to themselves or others facilitate, pathways to professional help, and lead group air safety huddles.

An AIR safety huddle consists of the following:

  • an acute incident is identified by any staff member who escalates the need for an AIR safety huddle to an air delegate
  • the delegate responds gathering directly involves staff to voluntarily participate in an AIR safety huddle in an appropriate location
  • throughout the air safety huddle the AIR delegate looks for any behavioural signals that may indicate one-on-one support is needed
  • they provide psychological first aid where required or escalate to engage culturally appropriate support
  • or the employee assistance program where needed.

Hunter New England Local Health District AIR delegates are members and leaders of their target population respected by peers who have undergone a selection process and trained in psychological first aid.

AIR delegates require advanced listening skills and knowledge of available referral options.

Training for AIR delegates includes evidence-based endorsed psychological first aid practitioner training.

AIR support is an organisational strategy to ensure staff feel connected and supported.

This promotes a culture of workplace safety that impacts on both staff and patient wellbeing.

Interested in becoming an AIR delegate send an email to the address on the screen HNELHD-AIRSupport@health.nsw.gov.au
