The popular school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SBAT) program has commenced at Far West Local Health District for 2025, with 11 students taking part.
The students will be the eleventh group to commence traineeships at FWLHD. The students will be working at Broken Hill and Menindee, in nursing, allied health, and business services.
FWLHD Director of People and Culture, David Green said the Far West LHD SBAT program is a great way for students to set themselves up for a career within the health sector while completing their HSC.
Mr Green said students are paid for real work experience, while gaining a nationally recognised VET qualification and contributing towards their HSC studies.
“Students complete the SBAT program over two years with support from the District, Training Services NSW, registered training organisations, Apprenticeship Support Australia, and local high schools,” he said.
“During their two-year traineeship the students will attend face-to-face training, skills workshops and virtual training using a variety of different technologies, to complete their classroom learning and obtain their certificate.”
Mr Green said more than 50 per cent of the students who commenced the program are now employed as casuals for FWLHD.
“The District is proud to continue to provide Far West students a supported pathway from school to work and we wish them the very best on their traineeships,” Mr Green said.
“Students in the SBAT program have an opportunity to gain entry into the workforce and gain an industry recognised qualification while they are studying at school.
“Building and growing our future workforce is very important for the District and the SBAT program helps by supporting students with employment opportunities.
“We look forward to nurturing and creating successful traineeships that will help build the future workforce for our health services and community.”
Healthcare workers in Broken Hill will benefit from new health worker accommodation, with 20 new units at the Broken Hill Health Service now ready to move into.
This April Falls Month older people living Far West LHD are being encouraged to look after themselves with regular exercise and activity to help maintain independence.
Patients, families and carers are invited to recognise an outstanding local nurse or midwife, as part of the 2025 Far West Local Health District (FWLHD) Nursing and Midwifery Awards.
