Located at the Crescent Head Country Club, the course is the first of its kind in regional NSW and includes 18 holes of varying degrees of difficulty, and the little course is making a big name for itself with players lining up to hit the greens.
Crescent Head Country Club Secretary Manager Colan Ryan said after a lot of planning it’s wonderful to see and hear people out enjoying themselves.
“We have local aged care facilities, disability and nursing services, mental health groups, the local public school and Macleay Vocational College all coming to use the course,” Mr Ryan said.
“People can use their wheelchairs, mobility aids or prams on the entire green and it’s just fantastic to hear them laughing and cheering for each other as they enjoy the game.”
Independent support worker Jamie Roberts tested the course out with her 45-year-old client Kai Williams, and says it’s a great addition to the region, right down to enjoying an icy-pole or an icy cold drink at the 19th hole.
“There are no words, we had an absolute blast and he got very competitive, and to see the joy on his face it was amazing,” Ms Roberts said.
“It’s just so important to have inclusive opportunities like this in regional areas, Kai felt like he could get out and have a go like everyone else and he was so excited he has asked if he can come back here for his birthday to share the experience with his friends.”
Until now Jamie and Kai have not found a course where he could negotiate his wheelchair to every hole, so he had never played an entire game.
The course has also attracted enthusiastic mini golfers from as far afield as Ireland and the United States, and of course local and visiting families looking for some holiday fun.
Department of Regional NSW Executive Director Harriet Whyte said the NSW Government is proud to support attractions that welcome all users.
“Whether you’re after a competitive hit, or a more relaxing game, this course really does cater for everyone and I’m so pleased to see people out there having a go,” Ms Whyte said.
“Inclusion and accessibility are just so important in regional NSW, and creating attractions like this gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy the experiences our regions have to offer.”
The Crescent Head Country Club received $100,000 from the NSW Government to fund detailed plans, designs and site preparation.
