How to apply
We want all candidates to have a good experience when applying to work at the department. Our recruitment process involves:
- applying online through I work for NSW
- attending an interview
- completing assessment tasks and activities
- pre-employment checks: reference checks, qualifications, eligibility to work in Australia, working with children checks, criminal history and some roles will require a health assessment.
We encourage and support applications from people with disability (as defined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992) by making adjustments to the interview and assessments to enable equal access in the recruitment process. Candidates can request an adjustment at any stage of the recruitment process.
Flexible working
Flexible working is part of life at the department. Wherever you work within the broader group of agencies that makes up the department, there are flexible working options to build a more engaged, diverse and inclusive work culture. We have offices and connected workplaces across NSW including:

We firmly believe in equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of age, disability, caregiving responsibilities, sex, cultural background, race, gender, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, military/veteran status, or any other attribute protected by law.
Our goal is to build a workforce that not only represents but also understands and serves the diverse communities of New South Wales. We are committed to making our state a vibrant and inclusive place to live, work, and thrive for everyone.
We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds and experiences. Selection for roles within the department is based solely on individual merit. We encourage you to reach out to us to discuss any accommodations or adjustments that may be needed during the recruitment process, ensuring that you have every opportunity to showcase your talent, skills, and potential.
Join us as we strive to create a workplace where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.
Support for our people with disability
We are working with our people with disability so we can remove barriers and make our workplace inclusive and accessible. We want all our people to be able to fully participate in the workplace so they can achieve their career goals.
We are Disability Confident Recruiter accredited. For the disability community, this means we have a recruitment process that's accessible. People with disability can apply for our jobs without experiencing barriers.
How we support our people with disability in the workplace
All employees working in the department can request a workplace adjustment. A workplace adjustment is a change to process, procedure or environment that enables people with disability to participate fully in all aspects of employment, have equal access to opportunities for career development and be safe in the workplace.
The Wellbeing Ambassador Program is a voluntary peer support program.
This program is designed to raise awareness of mental health concerns and mental health support services. The program provides training to employees on the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), common mental health concerns and the role of the Wellbeing Ambassador in confidently referring people to professional support, including the EAP.
We strive to ensure our people, visitors and customers are able to access our premises in a safe, equitable and dignified way. Our connected workplaces are safe and secure, flexible, sustainable and inclusive workspaces that can be used by employees as their primary headquarters or on an ad hoc basis. They enable all staff to move easily between different offices because they are agile, accessible, and ‘connected’ from a technology perspective, meaning you can just ‘plug and play’.
