Our role in volunteering
We work to grow, empower and strengthen the volunteering sector.
Our team collaborates with government, businesses and volunteer involving organisations (VIOs).
VIOs are often not-for-profit or are community organisations that rely on volunteers to deliver vital services, programs or activities.
We understand how volunteering shapes our identity, community and economy.
This helps us champion and support the sector for the benefit of everyone in NSW.
Our vision and mission
Our vision for volunteering is one where volunteering in NSW grows and is vibrant. Everyone can volunteer, more often, throughout life, and their contributions are celebrated.
To achieve our vision, we need to inspire others, share stories, work in partnership, improve knowledge, promote the benefits and impact of volunteering, and invest in it.
Strategic direction: grow, understand, value
The NSW Government is responsible for implementing the NSW Volunteering Strategy 2020-2030.
This strategy focuses on growing volunteer participation, building sector capacity, improving our knowledge of volunteering, and enhancing volunteer recognition in NSW. Our strategy has three focus areas:
- Growth and support: Increasing participation in volunteering and making volunteer recruitment, retention and management easier by building the capacity of the sector.
- Knowledge: Improving our understanding of volunteering in NSW.
- Value: Enhancing recognition of the value of volunteering and the contributions made by volunteers in NSW.
We strengthen volunteering
The NSW Government supports and promotes volunteering to enrich the lives of volunteers, strengthen local communities and benefit NSW.
We support all people in NSW to connect and contribute through volunteering. We encourage people of different ages, people with disability and people from diverse cultural backgrounds to get active through volunteering.
Supporting VIOs
We support not-for-profit and community organisations to recruit, train and retain volunteers.
Promoting and recognising volunteering
We promote the volunteering sector and sponsor support, research, and recognition programs as well as sector conferences.
