About this innovation challenge
Collectively known as 'active transport', walking and bike riding provide multiple benefits for communities.
They include:
- cleaner local environments
- healthier lifestyles
- travel cost savings.
Challenge statement
In this challenge, we asked the emerging technology sector:
How might we use data and technology to better understand active transport in NSW and make evidence-based decisions to support adoption and mode shift?
Status
This challenge is currently in the proof-of-concept stage. Veitch Lister Consulting (VLC) has been selected to progress their solution.
In February 2024, transport planning firm VLC was awarded $1 million to develop a proof of concept of their solution, known as PATH.
The solution uses data and technology to visualise and analyse how people are moving through places, whether they are walking or cycling. It also looks at the common factors that make a place walkable or cyclable.
The solution is built on real-people movement data. It uses leading-edge technology to help us test different scenarios. This helps us understand the impact of active transport infrastructure on transport patterns. This insight will help us to make better investment decisions and increase active transport uptake.
