Charter principles

This Smart Places Customer Charter includes 6 principles to guide the creation and management of smart places.

Co-creating smart places

Partner with the people and groups who experience and use the place.

Respecting local character

Preserve and enhance local character, history, function and amenity.

Advancing digital inclusivity

Improve access to digital connectivity and services and make sure no one is left behind.

Keeping information safe

Collect data with a clear purpose and manage it responsibly.

Creating an open and fair environment

Share data and insights. Use standards to support innovation and interoperability.

Delivering benefits that last

Manage and maintain assets and evaluate projects to ensure benefits are realised.

Charter core values

Connection to Country

Respect First Nations people’s rights, obligations and role as Traditional Custodians of the land, sea and waterways. Prioritise their input and ensure smart places celebrate culture and contribute to economic independence and self-determination.

Sustainability and resilience

Design smart places to meet the needs of people today, without compromising outcomes for future generations. Make sure your smart place can adapt to a changing environment.

Benefits for people

Respond to the needs of the people who live, work and visit the place. Meet the needs of diverse groups in ways that support equity and inclusion.

The Smart Places Customer Charter was shaped by direct community input, so it captures community expectations of smart places. The Charter was co-designed with all 3 levels of government, industry stakeholders, First Nations people, and representatives from a variety of NSW communities.

We published a draft in July 2021, and asked for community feedback. Over 4 weeks, almost 5000 people visited the Charter website, over 120 people attended a webinar and we received 15 submissions, 23 surveys and 14 interactive comments. The final Charter captures the feedback provided.
