An abundance of outdoor activities on Walcha's doorstep can be accessed easily within a short drive from town. Highlights include Apsley and Tia Waterfalls, Budds Mare Lookout and Riverside (over 700 metres in depth from the rim of one of Australia's largest gorge systems).
Fishing and camping are popular activities around New England High Country, with an abundance of cool running streams and National Parks namely, Oxley Wild Rivers, Werrikimbe, Cottan-Bimbang, Willi-Willi and Nowendoc National Parks.
Walcha's topography lends itself to some great four-wheel-driving and motorcycling on the Oxley Highway or Thunderbolts Way (two of the best rides in Australia).
