Due to the abundant variety of favoured eucalyptus and freedom from disease, Gunnedah has had a steady koala population living in and around town and scattered throughout the Shire. Locals and visitors alike, feel privileged to have access to these endangered Australian icons.
Tree corridors and increased habitat in the area allow koalas access throughout town and district, and the basalt topped hills across the Shire provide perfect soils for growing koalas' favourite trees.
Sadly, there has been a decrease in the local population since 2009, with many factors contributing to this but none the less popular Koala hang-outs to spot a Koala around town is the Gunnedah Golf Club and Stock Road walking/cycle track. Bindea Walking Track up to Porcupine Lookout.
Other areas include TAFE Campus in Hunter Street and western side of the Gunnedah Showground complex and Kennel Club grounds.
St Xaviers School, Tourist Caravan Park, Mullibah Lagoon and the western end of Maitland Street around the Donnelly Fields on the open river flats and along the banks of the Namoi River.
Contact the Gunnedah Visitor Information Centre for tips on the most recent koala sightings.
