Tweed River entrance sand dredging

The Works

Vessel operators are advised that as part of the Tweed River maintenance works, Tweed Sand Bypassing will be undertaking dredging work on the Coral Sea in the vicinity of the entrance to the Tweed River at Tweed Heads 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from Thursday, 18 July 2024 for approximately 60 days (dates may vary due to weather conditions). Associated sand relocation operations will be undertaken between Fingal Head and Bilinga Beach (Qld). 

Navigation Restriction and Warning

The works will be conducted by the trailing suction dredge "TRUD R” (‘the vessel’) which will dredge sand deposits in the vicinity of the entrance to the Tweed River between the above dates. The dredged material will then be transferred between Bilinga (Qld) and/or Fingal nearshore deposition sites. The vessel will display appropriate day shapes and lights at night and can be contacted on VHF16 if required.

Vessel operators in the vicinity should operate at reduced speed so as to create minimal wash and maintain a safe distance from the works.

Vessel operators are advised to exercise extreme caution when navigating in the vicinity of the works.

Directions

• Vessels are required to comply with all signage and buoyage. Failure to comply is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.11 (4) - Maximum Penalty $5,500 in relation to wash and $1,100 for any other case.)
• Persons within the vicinity of the Works must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the works or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
