The Works
Vessel operators are advised that Hunter Wharf & Barge will be undertaking wharf replacement works at Smithtown and Gladstone on the Macleay River for Kempsey Shire Council. The works will be conducted from Monday, 15 July 2024 to 30 November 2024 between 7am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday, and 7am and 12 noon, Saturdays. Navigation in the vicinity may be restricted during these times.
Navigation Restriction and Warning
Barges will be in use during the works period which at times may restrict vessel access to the Smithtown and Jerseyville Boat Ramps. The excavator barge will have orange flashing solar lights on each corner and a white solar anchor light on its roof. The works area will be boomed by silt curtains. Yellow buoys will be installed to warn approaching vessels.
Transport for NSW advise vessel operators to be aware of an increase in construction activity and exercise caution when navigating in the vicinity of the works and waters nearby and pay particular attention to construction work vessels and any advisory signage.
Vessel operators are required to travel at a safe speed and limit wash in the vicinity of the works.
This navigation warning remains in place for the duration of the works.
Directions
- Vessels are required to comply with all signage and buoyage. Failure to comply is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.11(4) - Maximum Penalty $5,500 in relation to wash and $1,100 for any other.
- Persons within the vicinity of the Works must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the works or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00).
- Vessels are required to maintain a safe distance and speed from the works and operators are reminded that the production of wash which impacts unreasonably on the works is an offence (Marine Safety Regulation 2016 – clause 11(2) - Maximum Penalty $5,500.00).
