Wave measuring buoys

Transport for NSW advises vessel operators that an additional wave measuring buoy was deployed on Saturday 10 September 2022 by the Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES) in the vicinity of Cook Island Aquatic Reserve which is located in the Coral Sea generally North East of Fingal Head. Mariners are advised that these are the approximate positions for the wave measuring buoys which will remain in place indefinitely.
Long elastic mooring systems have been utilised to secure the wave measuring buoys and consequently the positions given may vary with tide and currents.

Latitude and longitude positions are on WGS84 horizontal datum and are compatible with GDA94 datum.
All buoys have a 'Keep Clear' sign on the hull and mariners are asked not to tie off to the buoys and to remain at least 100 metres clear of any wave measuring buoy. The buoys are indicated by a navigation light that has a Fl Y (5) 20s pattern.
