What is rider training
If you live in an area where motorcycle rider training courses are available (a declared area), you must complete training with an approved provider to get your rider licence.
There are 2 levels of training you need to complete:
- Pre-learner – this course is designed for people who have no motorcycle riding experience. The course is conducted in a controlled off-road area. It takes 7 hours and is delivered over 2 days.
- Pre-provisional – this course includes on-road activities as well as activities conducted in a controlled off-road area, and a practical test to assess your riding ability. It is a full-day course (7 hours).
Booking a training course
You need to book directly with your chosen training course provider. You’ll need to pay the course fee when you book.
You should also let the training provider know if you want to learn to ride a motor scooter.
Find your closest rider training centre from our approved list.
Before you book
In order to book training, you'll need one of the following forms of ID:
- a current NSW driver licence
File
Customer number application private (PDF 190.93KB)
If you don’t have either of these, you'll need to visit a service centre to get a Transport Customer Number. You'll need to provide full proof of your identity to apply.
Changing or cancelling a booking
If you need to change or cancel a booking, contact the training provider directly. Changes are subject to the terms and conditions of your booking, as are refunds of course fees.
Trikes
A trike-only testing and training pathway to enable customers to obtain a licence to ride trike is now available.
To ride a trike on NSW roads, riders must complete trike training and testing if they do not already hold a rider licence. These courses are delivered with a strong focus on individual attention and safety.
Trike riders are encouraged to visit the Motocap website to compare safety and comfort ratings of gear for their ride.
Training and testing on a trike
If you want to use a trike (e.g. Piaggio PSI M59 (MP3 400)) for your pre-learner rider training course, you will need to bring your own trike for training. Contact the rider training provider by phone to discuss at the time of booking your pre-learner training.
You must:
- Make sure that the trike is included in the Learner Approved Motorcycle (LAM) list (PDF 482.79KB).
- Be able to transport the registered trike to your booked training course location. The trike must be transported by a licensed rider or trailered to the rider training location.
- Provide the following to the Rider Training provider:
- trike registration plate number
- a current copy of the Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance Policy for the trike.
Rider training and testing booking procedures remain unchanged for declared and undeclared areas.
Waiver of insurance
The Rider Training Provider will require you to complete a waiver of insurance document. This document will be supplied on the day of training and testing.
