Margaret Cunneen SC inquired into and reported on the police investigation of child sexual abuse claims in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

About the Inquiry

In 2014 Margaret Cunneen SC led the Inquiry into the police investigation of child sexual abuse allegations in the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.

There was an Inquiry because serious claims of cover-up and concealment had been made about the Catholic Church and the NSW Police Force.

The Commissioner investigated:

  • if the Catholic Church tried to hide criminal offences of child sexual abuse
  • if the Police helped the Catholic Church to hide its crimes
  • why Detective Chief Inspector Peter Fox, who was investigating the abuse in the Catholic Church, was asked to stop.
