Snowy Hydro Water security

Ensuring ongoing access to a reliable water supply is a priority for the NSW Government and a core focus of the $4.2 billion Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund.

To support farmers and regional communities by ensuring ongoing water security, the NSW Government is investing in dams, pipelines and weirs in priority catchments across regional NSW.

The Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund drives some important water security projects which are led by the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) Water Division.

Regional Water Strategies

The Regional Water Strategies assess potential drought and flood impacts using climate data and water modelling to deliver long-term policy, planning and infrastructure solutions, to ensure ongoing water security and resilience across regional NSW.

There are a total of 12 Regional Water Strategies (see map below), with the Greater Hunter strategy already finalised.

Strategies for the following catchments were recently on public exhibition and are being finalised:

  • Namoi
  • North Coast
  • Border Rivers
  • South Coast
  • Far North Coast
  • Macquarie-Castlereagh
  • Lachlan
  • Gwydir

The remaining three Regional Water Strategies will be on public exhibition in the coming months.
