The NSW Government is taking proactive steps to enhance connectivity and support communities affected by natural disasters.
At a press conference on 20 September 2024, NSW Premier Chris Minns, together with NSW Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib and NSW Telco Authority Managing Director Kylie De Courteney, announced new mobile assets aimed at swiftly restoring communications after emergencies.
These advanced resources, developed by NSW Telco Authority, include three fire-resistant, pre-built communications shelters, 18 trailered generators and four broadband Cells on Wheels (COWs), along with a satellite-equipped vehicle for Service NSW. These mobile solutions will play a crucial role in overcoming Public Safety Network outages and providing temporary connectivity to communities when traditional carrier networks are down.
Kylie De Courteney emphasised the significance of these innovations. "This is a game-changer in disaster management and recovery efforts. We are committed to investing in the technology needed to keep our communities safe and connected," Ms De Courteney said.
Partnerships with local industry service providers like Pivotel, have been instrumental in the development of the broadband COWs, which can be deployed within hours, offering wide-area Wi-Fi connectivity until regular services are restored.
These assets mark a significant step forward in supporting first responders and ensuring communities remain safe and connected even during the most challenging situations.
