Customers on the domestic and international airport line will soon have access to more than 200 extra services every week in non-peak times when:
- trains double from four to eight services an hour on weekends
- extra services are implemented on weekdays late at night, meaning trains running every 15 minutes, instead of every 20 to 30 minutes on today's timetable.
The service improvements cater for a spike in customer demand, with customer journeys to and from the airport each year increasing by 32 per cent since 2014. Weekend patronage has grown even more – shooting up 42 per cent.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said the growth in passenger numbers is unprecedented.
“It’s clear that more and more people are choosing the train to and from the airport, so we need to move fast to cater for this growth,” Mr Constance said.
“We know driving to the airport can be painful, so we’re hoping the service boost acts as another incentive to leave the car behind.”
More Trains, More Services delivers extra services, better infrastructure and new trains
Over the next three years, NSW Government will also deliver:
- an extra 20 express trains per week during peak hour connecting Campbelltown and Macarthur customers with Sydney CBD via the T2 Airport Line
- hundreds of extra services across the network, including peak hour express services between Parramatta and Sydney CBD
- new trains to the suburban network that will spend less time in maintenance and more time on the tracks
- upgraded rail infrastructure (i.e. better signalling systems, power supply upgrades and station improvements) allowing Sydney's complex network to operate at an even greater capacity
