Thirty helmets were tested against a range of criteria, including protection and comfort. The helmets were tested by Consumer Rating and Assessment of Safety Helmets, Transport for NSW, Insurance Australia Group and the Transport Accident Commission.
The top-rated motorcycle helmets include:
- Airoh Valor
- Bell Star (with angular acceleration management system)
- HJC RPHA 90
- O’Neal Sierra II
- Alpinestars Supertech M8 (with angular acceleration management system)
- Answer Racing AR1
- Fly Racing F2 (with angular acceleration management system).
Helmets reduce the severity of head injuries as well as the likelihood of death and permanent injury. As motorcyclists are much more exposed than motorists in a crash, choosing the best helmet is important.
So far in 2019, 51 motorcyclists have been killed on NSW roads. Eight more than during the same period in 2018.
Minister for Regional Roads Paul Toole said motorcyclists can use the testing results to select the safest motorcycle helmet available.
“These ratings give riders more information so they can choose the best helmet for their situation,” Mr Toole said.
