The former government failed to deliver the park after it was initially promised to residents in 2014 as part of a masterplanned development. Families who bought in to the development were also cheated with delayed and inadequate school infrastructure.
The Minns Labor Government is committed to righting the former government's wrongs in Wentworth Point, with an upgrade to the public school in train while a new high school will open on Day 1, Term 1 next year.
The peninsula park will provide around four hectares of new open space, comprising the park grounds and shared oval between Wentworth Point High School and the community.
Workers are now mobilising on the park site to demolish old concrete structures, with earthworks to kick off in coming weeks to lay the foundations for a vibrant new public space on the Parramatta River.
Initial works involve:
- Building a shared-use walkway to link the ferry wharf with Burroway Road (a temporary pathway will be installed between the park and Burroway Road until a permanent pathway is constructed by a future landowner of the mixed-use site)
- Building new seawalls, featuring different sized rocks to minimise wave erosion while helping to protect the saltmarsh habitat and support marine life to establish and flourish
- Building a new road to provide access to the park and future mixed-use development, and provide additional street parking spaces
- Installing utilities to service the park and future mixed-use development
The construction milestone follows important work completed in recent months to rehabilitate endangered saltmarsh habitat at the peninsula’s north as part of a new protected area.
The restoration program involved:
- Installing erosion controls and temporary fencing to protect the saltmarsh during park construction;
- Removing waste and weeds, targeting invasive species such as Spiny Rush
- Planting more than 15,000 saltmarsh species propagated from seeds and cuttings collected from the site
Landcom is maintaining the saltmarsh with regular waste and weed removal until park construction is finished.
The park is expected to fully open to the community in mid-2026.
Construction hours are 7am-6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am-4pm Saturdays. The contractor and Landcom will keep neighbours, adjacent schools and the wider community informed as construction progresses.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said:
“It’s great news for the Wentworth Point community that work on the peninsula park is getting underway.

“The previous government announced and re-announced this project multiple times over the past 10 years and didn’t start it but we’re getting on with it.”
Member for Parramatta Donna Davis said:
“After 10 years of announcements and no action from the Liberals and Nationals, the Minns Labor Government is delivering the peninsula park.
“Every child should have a local park, especially in a suburb dominated with apartment living. Parks are a critical piece of community infrastructure providing for a liveable, thriving, well-designed neighbourhood.
“I'm so excited to see major construction works are now underway and look forward to watching the transformation of this space into a vibrant new public park with great amenity and spectacular views of the Parramatta River.
“Once complete, the peninsula park will be enjoyed by generations to come.”
