Since 2004, more than 900 couples have chosen to tie the knot in NSW on a leap day, with more than 450 couples celebrating their ‘first’ anniversary next year despite being married for 4 years.
The Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM) offers cost-effective wedding options for couples, with its new location at Pyrmont Bay becoming the home of the special leap year offering.
The Pyrmont Bay location has been designed to make the day even more special, offering water views and boasting 2 ceremony rooms, separate entry for weddings, reception area and private dressing rooms. It is just 2 minutes from Pyrmont Bay light rail on foot and close to Sydney’s CBD and a range of restaurants for post-ceremony celebrations.
Couples will be able to say “I do” from just $469 and can tailor their special day to suit their budget with options for extras including photography, floral arrangements, and reception packages.
The classic wedding ceremony package includes a notice of intended marriage, celebrant, and commemorative and marriage certificate, as well as use of the Terrumi Room, which means “always” or “forever” in the local Aboriginal language. There is an additional option to combine ceremony rooms to hold up to 70 guests.
From 27 February 2024, the Pyrmont Bay venue will replace the Chippendale site that has been used for BDM weddings since 2001, providing a more modern and accessible design.
Couples can also exchange vows in a legal-only ceremony alongside 2 witnesses and a celebrant in a small Registry room.
Those wanting to jump at the rare leap year wedding opportunity can secure their spot at on the BDM website. Bookings must be made at least one month prior to the wedding date.
Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said:
“This special leap year offering couldn’t come at a better time, with cost-of-living pressures impacting a lot of couples. Not only is this option truly unique, but it is also affordable.”
“To make your wedding even more memorable, a leap year date will definitely make it stand out.”
“If convenience and affordability are the focus for couples booking a leap year wedding with BDM, picking this special day means they will benefit for years down the track – with only one anniversary every four years to remember and exchange gifts for!”
