Contraband Policy

This policy informs the management of contraband at Youth Justice Centres and other facilities. The ability of Youth Justice NSW to fulfil its duty of care to young people, employees, and visitors is jeopardised when contraband items are brought into a Youth Justice Centre or other facility.

This policy applies to all Youth Justice NSW, Department of Education, and Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network employees working within the Youth Justice environment.

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • inform all employees of legislative and Youth Justice NSW requirements
  • provide consistency in the prevention, management and reporting of contraband across Youth Justice Centres.

Employees and visitors caught bringing in, or attempting to bring in, any prohibited items are guilty of an offence and liable to a penalty not exceeding $1110.00 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 12 months.
