Bail and Accommodation Support Service
Crisis accommodation is managed by the Bail and Accommodation Support Service (BASS).
Youth Justice works with non-government providers to offer short-term accommodation for young people across NSW. Most of these providers are Youth Specialist Homelessness Services that are funded by the Department of Communities and Justice.
Support providers in five locations offer accommodation for up to 28 days for young people under Youth Justice supervision in:
- Central West
- Far West
- Riverina Murray
- Blacktown and Northern Sydney
- Wollongong
Bail Support Services
Youth Justice also partners with providers in seven locations to offer accommodation for young people referred for bail support. The Bail and Accommodation Support Service operates an after-hours intake service (formerly known as the Bail Assistance Line) to help NSW Police divert young people from custody.
If a young person in police custody is granted bail but is unable to return home, BASS works with the young person and NSW Police to find another safe place to return to. This may be with a member of the young person’s extended family or perhaps in a short-term placement with a funded Bail Support provider. These placements are up to 28 days and funding is allocated to providers on a fee-for-service basis.
Bail support providers are located in the following areas:
- Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast
- Central Coast
- Bathurst and Orange
- Nepean Blue Mountains
- Wollongong
- Inner West (Sydney)
- Northern Sydney
