Research Approval Process

This factsheet provides an outline of each step in the approval process for conducting research within Youth Justice NSW. Applicants need to contact the Research and Information Unit to discuss their research interests. The Research and Information Unit assess and review all proposals for research to determine if the research will contribute to the development of evidence-based interventions for young people involved in the criminal justice system.

The process involves:

• 3 stages of screening by the Research & Information Unit
• submission of a research proposal and research application
• evidence of approval from a National Health and Medical Research Council -registered Human Research Ethics Committee
• ethics approval from the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council or Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) Ethics Committee, or similar
• consideration by the Youth JusticeNSW Research and Evaluation Steering Committee 
• approval by the Youth Justice NSW Executive Director.
