Apply for housing assistance
How to apply for housing assistance and the evidence needed for your application.
What is housing assistance?
Housing assistance is a range of housing related products we might assist you with depending on your individual circumstances. By completing an application for housing assistance form, we can assess which products are right for you based on your current circumstances and eligibility. Available products include:
- private rental assistance products
- private rental subsidies
- temporary accommodation
- emergency temporary accommodation
- supported and crisis accommodation
- affordable housing
- social housing.
Eligibility
You must be aged 18 or over to apply for housing assistance and meet the eligibility criteria, including:
- be resident in NSW or have an established need to live in NSW
- be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia
- have a household income within the income eligibility limits
- not own any assets or property which could reasonably be expected to resolve their housing need
- be able to sustain a successful tenancy.
In some circumstances, you can apply if aged 16 or over.

What you will need
You must provide evidence for yourself and each person on your application aged over 18. If you and or your partner are aged 16 or over, you must also provide this evidence.
You must provide evidence of:
- identity
- NSW residency or an established need to live in NSW
- citizenship or permanent residency of Australia
- income and assets that show your household is within the income eligibility limits
- any land or property you or anyone on your application own, or part own
- any debts to a social housing provider
- your ability to sustain a successful tenancy, without support or with appropriate support in place
- the type of housing you or a member of your household needs to support an ongoing medical condition or disability.

How to apply
You can apply for housing assistance in NSW:
Online
Applying online is the quickest and simplest way to apply.
Call us
Calling the Housing Response Centre on 1800 422 322, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm.

Forms you may need to support your application:
- Evidence requirements information sheet
- Medical assessment
- Independent living skills assessment
- Details of land or property ownership
- General consent to exchange information and authority to act on client's behalf
- Consent to exchange information between a social housing provider and support worker
- Acknowledgement and agreement to repay debt
- Housing statement
Already applied?
If you have already applied for housing assistance, you can access your information by registering for MyHousing Online. Or you can download the MyHousing mobile app.
If you are approved for social housing and are listed on the NSW Housing Register and your circumstances change, you can complete the change of circumstances online form.
