Improving amenities on class 1 building sites
Find out how you can contribute to the improvement of amenities on building sites and make it a safe and better workplace for everyone onsite.
Construction sites should be safe workplaces for everyone
Construction is a large growth industry that employs more than 1.1 million people in Australia. NSW needs over 100,000 new constructors to meet the current demand for new homes.
Improving amenities on building sites can make the industry a better place to work and help attract more people to careers in construction.
How we are improving amenities on building sites
Building Commission NSW is calling on developers, their consultants and contractors engaged for the design and construction of class 1 building sites to make a commitment to create working conditions that are safe, clean and compliant.
We aim to support these developers to ensure site safety by:
- Providing appropriate amenities to building sites, ensuring they are properly maintained.
- Minimise waste production, especially hazardous waste.
What is being trialled
Toilets should be:
- In good working order.
- Accessible to workers.
- Safe and ergonomic.
- Appropriate and fit for purpose.
- Set up to minimise splash exposure to human waste, biological material and chemicals.
- Properly maintained with cleaning and the emptying of waste in a timely manner and at least once per working day.
- Cleaned and maintained with a focus on ensuring:
- There are no slip, trip or fall hazards
- The amenities are free of insects, spiders, snakes and other pests.
- Safe so there is no risk of infection or illness from using or being in the amenities.
- Positioned to avoid excessive heating of cubicles due to their location.
- Adequately ventilated to allow fresh air to circulate to minimise toilet gas build up, to displace odours and to reduce heat.
- Sufficient in size and number for the site with at least 1 toilet amenity with running water and handwashing facilities being provided for the site for every 100 people (actual or proposed) on the site.
- Cater appropriately for all genders so that the privacy, dignity and safety of users are maintained.
