Sydney Drug Court expands to five days

Until now, the Sydney Drug Court has been operating one day a week, capping the number of people that can be seen each day. There has also been a limit to the number of participant referrals made from local government areas.

Moving forward, the Court will operate five days a week with Justice Health NSW clinicians (CNS and CNC’s) central to the court liaison and care collaboration involving multiple agencies.

Justice Health NSW Drug and Alcohol Service Director Craig Cooper said the expansion was significant for Justice Health NSW.

“The sheer volume of cases will increase five-fold, which is hugely positive as it diverts people who need drug treatment into our community,” Craig said.

“The program involves a two-week intensive assessment process, regular court appearances, drug testing, and the transfer of patient care to community partners via a highly suitable treatment plan.

“The evolution of this program strengthens equitable outcomes for people in all areas of our community, a key outcome of our Strategic Plan.”

Justice Health NSW is currently the lead health agency that coordinates the drug treatment program in the Sydney, Dubbo and Parramatta drug courts.
