What’s this about?
The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking feedback on a proposal by Inner West Council to name an urban place in Inner West Local Government Area (LGA) as Quong Tart Plaza.
The proposed urban place is located in the vicinity of Hercules Street between Brown Street and Liverpool Road in the suburb of Ashfield.
The proposed name is to commemorate Mei Quong Tart (1850-1903), known as Quong Tart, an Australian of Asian heritage who made a significant influence on his local community in Sydney in the late nineteenth century.
Quong Tart was born in a small town in Kanton Province, now Guangdong Province, in China. When he was only 9 years old, he left his parents and moved to Australia. As an adult, Quong Tart became a wealthy and successful businessman who was well-respected by many people in Sydney.
During his lifetime, Quong Tart was a prominent figure in easing tensions between Chinese and Europeans interests in Australia, successfully promoting the well-being and acceptance of Sydney’s growing Chinese community amongst times of significant anti-Chinese sentiment. There is currently a monument of Quong Tart located in Hercules Street to honour and celebrate the achievements of Ashfield’s first Chinese citizen.
