The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Cessnock Shire Council to name a reserve in the locality of Heddon Greta as Averys Rise Park.
The proposed name is in honour of the late William Avery (1843 – 1914) and his family who played a significant role in shaping the timber industry of the area.
William Avery was born in Newcastle and settled with his wife in the Hunter Valley where they became well known for their timber-getting in the Broken Back Ranges, using bullock teams to transport timber from the mountains through Kurri Kurri to Maitland for many decades.
