Program objective
The NSW National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) (Sheep and Goats) eID Infrastructure Planning and Design Grant provides funding to saleyards and processors.
It supports planning and design activities (including hiring a project manager or consultant) related to the development of a costed estimate of infrastructure (including hardware and software) and operational requirements for saleyards and processors to assist with the implementation of sheep and goat eID.
Assistance for saleyards
Assistance for saleyards ranges from $5000 to $15,000. Saleyard size is based on the number of head count per year, based on a 5-year average. It falls into 4 categories:
- Small saleyards (less than 100,000 head) – $5000
- Medium saleyards (more than 100,000, and less than 400,000 head) – $8000
- Large saleyards (more than 400,000, and less than 1.5 million head) – $10,000
- Extra-large saleyards (more than 1.5 million head) – $15,000
Assistance for processors
Assistance for processors ranges from $5000 to $15,000. Processor size is based on the number of head count per year, based on a 5-year average. It falls into 3 categories:
- Small processor (less than 200,000 head) – $5,000
- Medium processor (more than 200,000, and less than 500,000 head) – $10,000
- Large processor (more than 500,000 head) – $15,000
This program is funded and administered by Department of Primary Industries.
Eligibility
Who can apply
- Persons operating a saleyard/facility at which sheep or goats are sold.
- An organisation operating on behalf of more than one saleyard.
- Licensed abattoirs and knackeries under the NSW Food Act 2003.
Who can’t apply
Anyone not listed as an eligible organisation.
Types of projects funded under this grant
Planning and design activities (including engaging a project manager and/or consultant) to develop a costed estimate of infrastructure (including hardware and software, and structural modifications) and operational requirements.
What can’t you apply for
- Computers, laptops, phones and tablets
- eID Readers
- Software and associated data logging and data management equipment
- Processing equipment modifications
What your application needs to include
You will need to provide:
- a project plan and budget
- evidence of ownership and registered business status.
Costed Report Form
All applications must be supported by a costed Report Form which demonstrates the proposed updates to infrastructure and operational requirements to support the future implementation of sheep and goat eID.
(This plan must be provided to the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) within 6 months of receiving the grant funding.)

Address the eligibility criteria
To apply for this grant as a saleyard owner, the following conditions must be met:
- You are a saleyard owner with demonstrated commercial involvement in the sheep or goat industries within NSW.
- You are the owner of a saleyard business which operates as a sole trader, partnership, trust or private company.
To apply for this grant as a processor, the following conditions must be met:
- You are a licensed abattoir or knackery under the NSW Food Act 2003.
- Your business operates as a sole trader, partnership, trust or private company.
