At the Certificate II level jobs involve routine business tasks using basic practical skills. Tasks may include:

At the Certificate III level jobs are to apply a broad range of competencies in a varied work context. Employees may provide technical advice and support to a team. Tasks may include:

- writing simple documents
At Certificate IV level jobs are to analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources and provide leadership and guidance to others. Tasks may include:

- maintaining business technology
- promoting products and services
- managing projects
- writing complex documents
Job roles and titles vary across different industry sectors but may include accounts clerk, customer service advisor, clerk, office administration assistant, services officer, information officer and receptionist.
At Diploma level individuals with require substantial experience in a range of settings who are seeking to further develop their skills across a wide range of business functions. This qualification is also suited to the needs of individuals who possess sound theoretical business skills and knowledge that they would like to develop in order to create further educational and employment opportunities.
Job roles and titles vary across different industry sectors. Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:
- executive officer
- program consultant
- program coordinator
At Certificate III level trainee work to a range of administrative roles in varied contexts. Trainees may use some discretion and judgement and may provide technical advice and support to a team.
At Certificate IV level trainees use well-developed administrative skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of administrative contexts. They apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others. Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:
- Accounts Supervisor
- Executive Personal Assistant
- Office Administrator
- Project Assistant.
At Certificate III level trainees will be working in a range of complex customer service roles. Duties would include working with multiple communication channels, providing excellent customer service, adhering to key performance indicators, working in a team environment, providing support to a team, providing technical advice and capturing data. Trainees would work under supervision, but may have some authority to delegate.
At Certificate IV level trainees would have excellent communication and interpersonal skills who undertake complex customer interactions, often as a team leader and with significant authority to delegate. Duties may include responding to complex customer requests handling complaints; coaching staff and completing related administrative tasks.
Certificate IV level trainees will be engaged in environmental management and sustainability in a range of workplace contexts. It covers the skills and knowledge required to monitor and address environmental issues in a variety of industry sectors.
At the Certificate IV level trainees may work in jobs as human resources assistants, human resources officers and payroll officers. In smaller companies, jobs may be across all human resources management areas. In larger companies, jobs can focus on specialist areas such as remuneration, workforce planning or human resources information systems. Human resources officers can work in staff training and development, personnel management, performance management, occupational health and safety, equal employment opportunity, recruitment and selection, management consulting and job analysis.
At the Diploma level trainees possess a sound theoretical knowledge base in human resources management and demonstrate a range of managerial skills to ensure that human resources functions are effectively conducted in an organisation or business area. Typically they would have responsibility for the work of other staff.
The job roles and titles vary across different industry sectors. Possible job titles relevant to this qualification include:
- human resources adviser
- human resources and change manager
- human resources consultant
- human resources manager
- senior human resources officer.
At Certificate IV level trainees will be working as developing and emerging leaders and managers in a range of enterprise and industry contexts. As well as assuming responsibility for their own performance, individuals at this level provide leadership, guidance and support to others. They also have some responsibility for organising and monitoring the output of their team. Trainees apply solutions to a defined range of predictable and unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources.
At Diploma level trainees apply knowledge, practical skills and experience in leadership and management across a range of enterprise and industry contexts. Trainees at this level display initiative and judgement in planning, organising, implementing and monitoring their own workload and the workload of others. They use communication skills to support individuals and teams to meet organisational or enterprise requirements. Trainees plan, design, apply and evaluate solutions to unpredictable problems, and identify, analyse and synthesise information from a variety of sources.
In roles as legal assistant, assistant paralegal, legal secretary, legal support officer or legal support for recruitment consultant, trainees use existing skills and knowledge to provide support in a range of legal service settings. Tasks may include:
- producing complex legal documents
- applying the principles of contract law
- applying the principles of the law of torts
- researching legal information using primary sources
Certificate III level trainees will use a broad range of skills and knowledge in a wide variety of environments. At the core level trainees will:
- deliver a service to customers
- operate application software packages
- develop and apply knowledge of information and cultural services
At the elective level units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification.
Certificate IV level trainees well developed skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts. Trainees will apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.
Diploma level trainees will gain sound theoretical knowledge base and will use a range of specialised, technical or managerial competencies to plan, carry out and evaluate their own work or the work of a team. Trainees may provide leadership and guidance to others and have some responsibility for the output of others.
Certificate IV level trainees well developed marketing and communication skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts. Trainees in these roles will apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others, however they typically report to more senior practitioners.
At Certificate III level trainees will be working in a range of medical administration service roles. Duties would include applying principles of confidentiality, privacy and security within the medical environment working with multiple communication channels. They will interpret and apply medical terminology, maintain patient records, and prepare and process medical accounts. Trainee’s will typically, work in a team environment where their performance and acquisition of skills are monitored and validated under a workplace supervisor.
Certificate IV level trainees will be seeking to establish a small business and will use well developed skills and a broad knowledge base to solve a range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others, and have responsibility for the output of others.
Certificate IV level trainees will learn to apply project management skills and knowledge in a wide variety of context. They may be members of a project team with no direct responsibility for the overall project outcomes. They support project operations in one or more roles and under direction may also use project tools and methodologies selectively to support organisation or business activities. They take responsibility for their own outputs in terms of organisational and project quality requirements and may have limited responsibility for the output of others.
Diploma level trainees will learn to apply project management skills and knowledge in a variety of contexts, across a number of industry sectors. They will learn project management leadership and management roles and will be responsible for achieving project objectives. They will gain a sound theoretical knowledge base and use a range of specialised, technical and managerial competencies to initiate, plan, execute and evaluate their own work and/or the work of others.
Certificate III level trainees will have some understanding of relevant theoretical knowledge relating to dedicated recordkeeping functions in the workplace. The qualification may also apply to administrative, human resources or other staff within an organisation for whom recordkeeping is one of many duties for which they hold responsibility. Job roles include administration officer, assistant records clerk and assistant registry officer.
At Certificate IV level trainees apply well-developed recordkeeping skills and a broad knowledge base in a wide variety of contexts. They apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. Trainees may provide leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others. Job roles and titles may include:
- Medical Records Officer
- Records and Information Officer
- Records and Information Clerk
Diploma level trainees will learn to apply social media marketing skills, and knowledge in a variety of contexts across a number of industry sectors. They will learn mainstream social media marketing including:
- Implementing and managing a blog and
- content marketing and niche social media marketing strategies
- a sound theoretical knowledge base and specialised skills to build a strong personal brand in social media
- how to plan, implement and manage an email marketing campaign.
At Certificate III level trainees will be working in a range of technology service roles. Duties would include working with multiple software applications, providing customer service to colleagues and customers. Trainees will typically design, maintain, and produce business documents including spreadsheets and electronic presentations. They will be working in a team environment and collaborate on issues such as capturing data, technical support, data integrity and cyber security and provide other support to a team. Trainees’ performance and acquisition of skills are monitored and validated under a workplace supervisor.
Certificate III level trainees will have some understanding of performing work health and safety (WHS) duties in addition to their main duties. They will develop legislative knowledge and hazard identification and may provide technical advice and support to a team and apply a range of competencies in varied work contexts. The skills and knowledge attained include skills and knowledge to identify, prevent and report potential facility emergency situations required to contribute to a variety of WHS tasks.
Certificate IV level trainees will learn to apply Work Health and Safety skills and knowledge in a wide variety of contexts. Working as supervisors, WHS personnel, and workers in other WHS-related roles who manage risks effectively, apply relevant WHS laws, and contribute to WHS within the workplace in known or changing contexts with established parameters.
Diploma level trainees will learn to apply management skills and knowledge in a variety of contexts, across a number of industry sectors. They will learn how to lead: risk management, initial response to and investigate WHS incidents, developing, implementing and maintaining an organisation’s WHS management system, develop and use of WHS risk management tools and Manage WHS consultation and participation processes.

The following accredited course supports traineeship pathways:
On successful completion of the relevant qualification
- parties may apply to the Commissioner for Vocational Training for completion of the apprenticeship or traineeship prior to the nominal completion date of the training contract or;
- Training Services NSW may issue letters from the Commissioner to both parties inviting them to consider competency based completion if it has received advice from the training organisation that the apprentice or trainee is eligible to receive their qualification.

Applications under the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act 2001 to establish any traineeship whether full-time, part-time or school based will not be approved unless the Commissioner for Vocational Training is satisfied that appropriate industrial arrangements are in place.

Suitability of Business (Customer Engagement) traineeships
These qualifications are for people who typically work in call centres in roles such as call centre agents, customer service representatives and telesales representatives. The Certificate III qualification reflects the role of individuals who typically undertake complex customer interaction under supervision and with some authority to delegate. Duties at this level would include spending up to 60-70% (36-42 minutes per hour) working with multiple communication channels, receiving and responding to customer requests, handling customer complaints, adhering to key performance indicators, working in a team environment, providing support to a team, providing technical advice and capturing data.
Therefore an individual undertaking a traineeship must be in a workplace which when operating provides the operator inbound customer contact at the 60-70% benchmark of work in telephonic contact with clients and the balance on administrative activities including data entry.

When developing Training Plans, registered training providers should ensure that the training program satisfies the qualification packaging requirements and at the same time, reflects the nature of the business. Training Plans should be customised so that workplace activities support and align with the qualification units of competency.
From 1 January 2015 the NSW Government introduced new fee arrangements for government subsidised vocational education and training (VET). Under Smart and Skilled, all apprenticeship and most traineeship qualifications are subsidised. For a full list of all the qualifications refer to the current NSW Skills List. Information on the types and levels of subsidies can be found in the Smart and Skilled Fee Administration Policy. Training for existing-worker trainees is not subsidised.
Training Services NSW and Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) transition arrangements are aligned and applied retrospectively from 1 September 2015.
Registered training organisations (RTOs) may commence training in either the new or superseded qualification but must meet the requirements of ASQA. For more information refer to ASQA's General Direction - Learner Transition.
