Certificate III trainees will learn the skills and knowledge to be competent in the selling of products to other businesses and the building of strong business-to-business relationships. The trainee will learn to operate effectively and manage sales within a territory. Customer relationship management and effective coordination of the provision of services to the customer are essential for success. The demonstration of communication and administration skills to deliver efficient services is required.
Trainees perform roles, such as:
- provide face-to-face and telephone product and service advice in a wholesale or business-to-business sales setting
- work as an inside salesperson in a variety of business-to-business settings
- work as a sales representative calling on established customers and cold calling to build new business
- use computers as part of business and e-commerce processes
- process purchases
Job titles may include:
- business-to-business sales officer
- sales representative
- customer service officer
- customer sales executive
- sales counter assistant
- telephone salesperson
Certificate II trainees will learn to undertake retail operational tasks and provide initial customer service in community pharmacy environment. These trainees provide preliminary advice to customers and function under supervision, as part of a pharmacy team, recognising the limitations of their job role and referring customers to more senior pharmacy assistants or a pharmacist where appropriate. Trainees perform roles, such as:
- Responding to and advising customers on general retail products
- Accepting prescriptions
- Applying product knowledge to recommend and supply a defined range of pharmacy products and services to customers
- Referring customers to more senior pharmacy assistants or a pharmacist
- Operating within the legislative framework, regulation and protocols that apply to community pharmacy
- Operating a point of sale
- Maintaining stock levels and displays
- Organising and maintaining work areas
Certificate III trainees will learn to apply pharmacy product and service knowledge along with retail skills to provide service to customers in a community pharmacy environment. Work is undertaken with some autonomy but under the supervision of a pharmacist. Trainees will perform roles, such as:
- communicating with customers to identify needs
- accepting and delivering prescriptions to and from customers
- applying specialised product knowledge to recommend and supply pharmacy products and services to customers
- operating within the legislative framework, regulation and protocols that apply to community pharmacy
- recognising and acting on situations or requests that require referral to a pharmacist
- assisting in the dispensary
- creating and maintaining displays
- merchandising products and performing stock control
Certificate IV trainees will learn to apply knowledge and skills to provide leadership in the pharmacy team; working relatively autonomously under the broad supervision of the pharmacist. They may also coordinate and supervise others in the workplace. The role involves the use of a broad knowledge base incorporating some theoretical concepts and requires the identification, analysis and evaluation of information from a variety of sources. Trainees will perform roles, such as:
- maintaining store safety and security
- coordinating sales and customer service
- leading a team
- supervising front-of-pharmacy staff
- coordinating merchandise and pharmacy presentation
- coordinating pharmacy health promotions
- providing specialised pharmacy product advice
- providing health care support services
- assisting a pharmacist in dispensary operations and administration
- coordinating stock control requirements for the pharmacy
- coordinating the administration of the pharmacy quality program
Certificate II trainees undertake to learn the skills and knowledge to be competent in a range of activities and functions requiring basic retail operational knowledge and limited practical skills in a defined context. Work is undertaken in various retail store settings, such as specialty stores, supermarkets, department stores and retail outlets. Work is undertaken with some autonomy or in a team but usually under close supervision. Trainees will perform roles, such as:
- provide product and service advice in a retail store
- sell products and services in a variety of retail settings
- work as a checkout operator
- check stock and replenish shelves
- organise and maintain work areas and displays
Certificate III trainees undertake to learn the skills and knowledge to be competent in retail operations. Work is undertaken in various retail store settings, such as specialty stores, supermarkets, department stores and retail fast food outlets.
Trainees will perform roles, such as:
- provide in-depth product and service advice in a retail environment
- sell products and services in a variety of retail settings
- service the point-of-sale area
- organise and maintain work areas and displays
- carry out specific responsibilities, such as merchandising
Job titles may include:
- Sales assistant
- Senior sales assistant
- Customer service assistant
- Point-of-sale operator
Certificate IV trainees learn to provide the skills and knowledge to be competent in frontline management skills of those working in a retail or business-to-business environment. It applies to those who are managing a small retail outlet, a section or department within a larger retail store, a small business-to-business outlet, or a section or department within a larger business or franchise. Trainees perform roles, such as:
- manage a small to medium sized retail store group or franchise outlet
- manage an independent retail store
- manage a business-to-business outlet
- departmental or section management in a retail or business-to-business enterprise
- functional management roles, such as merchandise management
- manage an inside or outside sales team in a business-to-business company
Job titles may include:
- department manager
- merchandise manager
- customer service manager
- shift manager
- small business retail owner
These traineeships are for people seeking to work in retail sales and service (junior), retail operations and/or supervision (intermediate) and retail management (senior).
Diploma level trainees learn to operate as visual merchandising specialists. They apply skills and knowledge to provide a broad range of technical skills and sound knowledge of visual merchandising principles to plan and coordinate visual merchandising activities. They will work in a range of retail settings including speciality and fashion retailers, supermarkets and department stores.
Job titles may include:
- roles such as visual merchandiser
- retail store visual merchandiser
- visual merchandiser stylist and event visual merchandiser

Entry Requirements
*These qualifications have entry requirements.
On successful completion of the relevant qualification:
- parties may apply to the Commissioner for Vocational Training for completion of the apprenticeship or traineeship prior to the nominal completion date of the training contract or;
- Training Services may issue letters from the Commissioner to both parties inviting them to consider competency based completion if it has received advice from the training organisation that the apprentice or trainee is eligible to receive their qualification.

Applications under the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act 2001 to establish an apprenticeship or traineeship, whether full-time part-time or school based, will not be approved unless the Commissioner for Vocational training is satisfied that appropriate industrial arrangements are in place.

All private sector employers and employees in New South Wales are covered by the national industrial relations system administered by the Fair Work Commission (the Commission). The industrial instrument that applies is a national (modern) award or a current enterprise agreement registered with the Commission. Retail services trainees serving alcohol must undertake Responsible Service of Alcohol training. This training requirement is addressed in SIR07 Retail Services Training Package but the delivery of training is subject to Licensing Authority restrictions on trainers and assessors. Trainees must be at least 18 years of age to serve alcohol. For further information see the Liquor & Gaming NSW website.

When developing Training Plans, registered training providers should ensure that the training program satisfies the qualification packaging requirements and, at the same time, reflects the nature of the business. Training Plans should be customised so that workplace activities support and align with the qualification units of competency.
On 1 January 2015 the NSW Government introduced new fee arrangements for government subsidised vocational education and training (VET). Under Smart and Skilled, all apprenticeship and most traineeship qualifications are subsidised. For a full list of all the qualifications refer to the current NSW Skills List. Information on the types and levels of subsidies can be found in the Smart and Skilled Fee Administration Policy. Training for existing-worker trainees is not subsidised.
Training Services and Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) transition arrangements are aligned and applied retrospectively from 1 September 2015.
Registered training organisations (RTOs) may commence training in either the new or superseded qualification but must meet the requirements of ASQA. For more information refer to ASQA's General Direction - Learner Transition.
