Schools can plan and prepare to teach the new Music 7–10 Syllabus from this year. The new syllabus will be implemented in NSW schools in 2026.
Key features:
- Interrelated focus areas of Performing, Listening and Composing provide students with experience of the creative process as an individual and in collaboration with others.
- Content provides students with essential knowledge, skills and understanding to become thoughtful, informed and innovative musicians.
- Repertoire requirements provide students with opportunities to meaningfully engage with a broad range of music including the music of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
- Content supports inclusion of diverse learners including students who are D/deaf or hard of hearing.
- Inclusion of a depth study in Stage 5 encourages active student engagement.
- Inclusion of safe instrumental and vocal practices and safety protocols.
- Life Skills content provides opportunities for students with intellectual disability to make real world connections as well as music for personal enjoyment and expression.
Schools have access to support materials including teaching advice on the NSW Curriculum website to assist with implementation. More resources will be made available over time as well as online, accredited professional development on NESA’s online learning hub.
