New draft syllabuses for Years 7 to 10 Music and Dance have been updated for the first time in 20 years, and released to the public for feedback.
Chief Executive Officer of the NSW Education Standards Authority Paul Martin said the new syllabuses will continue the state’s work of delivering an evidence-led and streamlined curriculum in all learning areas.
“To better support teachers, the draft syllabuses have been streamlined so that it is clear what is essential. The practical and performance elements of these creative syllabuses continue to be a vital component of learning.”
“Informed by the latest research, these drafts reflect a more explicit focus on critical and creative thinking skills.
“They aim to provide high school students with opportunities to explore their interests, express themselves and develop a lifelong love for the Arts,” Mr Martin said.
In Music 7–10, a new ‘working musically’ focus area enables students to more effectively apply their knowledge and understanding - developing their skills and confidence as musicians.
In Dance 7–10, a more explicit focus on the connections between performance, composition and appreciation, will lead students to further understand and value dance as an artform.
Draft syllabus outcomes are also available for Stage 6 Continuers Language courses as part of the national Collaborative Curriculum and Assessment Framework for Languages (CCAFL). This provides Year 11 and 12 students in NSW the opportunity to study 17 small candidature languages courses that are available through this national program.
The public can have their say on the draft Stage 6 Continuers Languages syllabus outcomes until 29 August and on the draft Music and Dance syllabuses until 26 September: www.educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/about/news/consultations
The new syllabuses will be available to NSW schools in 2023.
