How is writing taught in NSW classrooms? Report on the Australian writing survey

This survey investigates teachers’ knowledge of and approach to teaching and assessing writing. Download the report to learn more about the findings and recommendations to support NSW teachers.

The Australian Institute of Learning Science and Teacher Education partnered with NESA and questioned over 4,000 primary and secondary teachers about:

  • their knowledge, understanding and skills for teaching writing
  • how they teach writing
  • how much classroom time they devote to teaching writing
  • how they assess writing
  • any professional development they have taken in teaching writing 
  • how well prepared they were to teach writing, based on their initial teacher education.
