Proficient Teacher benchmark research

The Proficient Teacher benchmark research established a baseline level for what it means for a teacher to effectively demonstrate Proficient Teacher practice according to the Standards.

Research involving submitted documentary evidence of 20 teachers, and the participation of 122 stakeholders, identified the key characteristics that effectively demonstrate practice at the Proficient Teacher level of the Standards.

Stakeholders included:

• supervisors
• principals
• Teacher Accreditation Authority delegates (prior to November 2022 teacher accreditation reforms)
• teachers from all sectors, systems and stages of schooling, including early childhood.

NESA used the findings to update resources that support teachers applying for Proficient Teacher accreditation.

Resources include evidence guides for:

• Proficient Teacher
• Highly Accomplished Teacher
• Lead Teacher

They also include online information sessions for teachers and Accreditation Supervisors on Working towards Proficient Teacher accreditation.

The characteristics of effective Proficient Teacher evidence are used to inform the criteria for conducting audits of Proficient Teacher accreditation records.
