Enablers and barriers to initiating professional development

This survey asked teachers if they had initiated their professional development over the last 18 months. Learn about the factors that prevented teachers from engaging in professional development and the recommendations to improve engagement.

This survey aims to understand the enabling factors for undergoing professional development (PD) training and the barriers that prevent teachers from engaging in further training.

The main enabling factors were:

  • most PD was initiated through schools
  • experienced teachers were more engaged with professional associations. 

The main barriers to PD were:

  • conflict with work schedules
  • cost
  • lack of accessibility/no nearby location
  • no relevant PD
  • responsibilities outside of school.
