Digital devices in NSW schools – policy and procedures

The digital policy for schools focuses on safe, responsible and respectful use of devices and services. Here are the resources school communities need.

Student use of mobile phones in public schools

After consultation with teachers, students and parents, NSW high schools have banned the use of mobile phones at school, starting Term 4, 2023. Mobile phones were already banned for primary students in NSW schools.

High school students are now required to leave their phones:

  • in lockable pouches
  • in lockers
  • off and away in bags, or
  • handed into school staff at the beginning of the day.

Technology in schools policies and procedures

Staff and students in NSW public schools can get direction and guidance on the use of technology in schools in the policy library or the key policies below:

  1. Digital Devices and Online Services - Staff Use – advice on the use of authorised digital devices and online services.
  2. Digital Devices and Online Services for Students – advice on the safe, responsible and respectful use of digital devices and online services for students. Principals need to determine their school’s approach, by using the Digital Devices and Online Services for Students Procedures.
  3. Information Security – advice on ensuring information is fit for purpose, secure, available, accessible, complies with applicable laws and regulations, enables staff to make everyday decisions and helps the department to realise its strategic objectives.
