The Works
Vessel operators are advised that Transport for NSW has engaged contractors to salvage the ex ferry Baragoola which has sunk along the western foreshore of Balls Head near the Coal Loader at Waverton. The wreck is deemed unsafe and Transport for NSW has installed Yellow Exclusion Zone buoys around the wreck. Initial works have commenced and further salvage works include diving operations are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.
Navigation Restriction and Warning
All vessel operators and persons in the vicinity must exercise extreme caution when navigating in the area, keep a proper lookout and pay particular attention to construction work vessels and any advisory signage. Vessel operators are to keep clear of the works area in particular vessels engaged in diving operations and follow directions from control and contractor vessels.
Operators of all vessels navigating within 200 metres of the Exclusion Zone must:
- travel at a speed of less than 6 knots, and
- not create wash that may damage or impact unreasonably on the Exclusion Zone.
This navigation restriction and warning remains in place for the duration of the works.
Directions
Transport for NSW advises:
a) Persons within the vicinity of the works must comply with any directions given by a Boating Safety Officer or Police Officer in relation to the works or to marine safety. Failure to comply with any such direction is an offence (Marine Safety Act 1998, s.15A - Maximum Penalty $3,300.00)
b) Vessels are required to maintain a safe distance and speed from the works and operators are reminded that the production of wash which impacts unreasonably on the works is an offence (Marine Safety Regulation 2016 – clause 11(2)) - Maximum Penalty $5,500.00).
