What you can do

The NSW Government asks the community to help reduce pressure on fuel supplies by:

  • buying fuel as you normally would – no more than you need
  • avoiding panic buying, which can worsen local shortages, particularly in regional communities
  • only storing small quantities, if storing fuel at home – fuel vapours are highly flammable, so it is best to only keep what you need for things like the mower or generator
  • treating service station staff with respect as they manage high demand and supply pressures
  • checking if your car or motorbike is compatible with E10 fuel and using it next time you fill up at the bowser to help lower demand for regular unleaded petrol
  • using the NSW FuelCheck app or visiting the FuelCheck website for daily information on fuel prices and availability across the state. You can also use FuelCheck to report price mismatches at the pump to help ensure everyone in NSW is getting a fair price.

What the NSW Government is doing

In NSW, fuel supply remains secure with some localised supply disruptions. This is reflected in the National Fuel Security Plan, which defines the conditions across Australia’s fuel supply and distribution network.

The NSW Government is monitoring fuel distribution closely and working with industry and the Australian Government to manage localised shortages, particularly in regional communities.

This includes operating a Liquid Fuel Emergency Operations centre to track fuel availability, forecast demand and coordinate fuel deliveries across NSW.

Fuel prices and consumer protections

NSW Fair Trading is conducting unannounced inspections of fuel retailers, focusing on fuel price transparency and protecting consumers from misleading pricing as fuel costs continue to rise. All service stations across NSW should be on notice.

National Fuel Security Plan

Amid global disruptions to oil and gas supplies, the Australian Government - in partnership with the NSW Government and other state and territory governments - is taking action to safeguard fuel supply and keep Australia moving.

Together, we are working with overseas suppliers, other nations and industry to make sure our fuel supply is robust and reliable.

Australia’s approach is set out in the National Fuel Security Plan (the National Plan) to facilitate a consistent national response. The National Plan has four levels – level 1 being the lowest and level 4 requiring the strongest action.

Australia is currently at level 2.
