This campaign builds on campaigns delivered over 2019, 2020 and 2021, focused on the general community in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley: ‘Floods. The Risk is Real,’ and ‘Floods. What’s your plan?’. These campaigns are delivered under the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley Flood Risk Management Strategy, coordinated by Infrastructure NSW.
The campaign content has been developed in 6 languages: Korean, Cantonese, Farsi, Arabic, Mandarin and Punjabi. The video content shows community members and NSW SES volunteers speaking in each language, explaining the benefits of preparation and easy steps to take.
The key messages are to ensure communities understand the risk of floods and to encourage them to prepare in practical ways, including:
- that it is not safe to stay at home during floods
- that it is not safe to drive through floodwater
- the importance of listening to warnings and advice, and
- know how to prepare an emergency Get Ready to Go kit.
Channels will be used including social media, SBS Radio, SBS Digital, and in language newspapers to get the messages out, with the campaign live for 8 weeks.
Carlene York, the NSW SES Commissioner said the campaign is really important to target those in the local Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley community who speak languages other than English, to help them understand their flood risk and how to prepare.
“It is great we now have tailored content in language, so that it is as accessible and relevant as possible,” she said.
“This is just one of the steps we have taken to communicate with CALD communities regarding the role of the NSW SES, how to keep safe during a flood, and how to prepare.”
