Denise has been recognised for her exceptional contributions to mental health research, particularly her success in integrating research programs into clinical care at the Nepean Anxiety Disorders Clinic and across NBMLHD's psychology services.
"Being named as a finalist is both a great honour and a deeply humbling experience," Denise said of her nomination.
"As a Senior Clinical Psychologist, it validates the dedication and hard work I’ve invested in both my clinical practice and research endeavours," says Denise.
Denise’s research spans a wide range of critical areas, including Hoarding Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety disorders, and telehealth. She is a strong advocate for vulnerable populations, notably those with Hoarding Disorder, whose voices she works to elevate.
A key aspect of Denise's work is her unwavering commitment to partnering with consumers in research, ensuring that therapeutic approaches are developed collaboratively and effectively.
"Denise has the natural curiosity of a researcher, identifying clinical gaps and problems and addressing these through research, emphasising real life application and ensuring implementation of findings," Julie Bohan, Manager Allied Health & Specialty Teams.
Denise's impressive publication record, boasting 40 publications and four more in the pipeline, highlights her expertise. She is also a respected peer reviewer for international journals, a remarkable achievement for a full-time clinician and manager.
"Much of Denise’s research has been translated into clinical practice. For example, the Nepean Hoarding Disorder Group Program, and screening and intervention for anxiety in pregnancy are now routine practice,” says Julie.
Denise’s commitment extends to mentoring and supervising the next generation of researchers. She established the ClinConnect research placements for Psychology in NSW and has mentored numerous students, fostering a culture of innovation.
"My own journey began here as a clinical psychology student on placement, and the experience was so rewarding that I decided to stay. Over the years, this Local Health District has offered me numerous opportunities to grow and develop both as a clinical psychologist and a clinical researcher."
Denise’s well-deserved nomination and significant contributions to mental health research and clinical practice will be celebrated at the Excellence in Allied Health Awards, held on 27 March 2025.
