Associate Professor Stuart Lane
Growing up in the economically challenged north of England was the inspiration for Stuart Lane’s passion for medicine.
A global leader in research and teaching in Intensive Care Medicine, Stuart sees parallels between where he grew up and the Nepean Blue Mountains community.
“Nepean is similar to northern England community in a lot of ways, not just in terms of access and equity, but also in a positive way, as a receptive community and an appreciative community.”
“The fact that people here have health problems but are open to support means I genuinely enjoy working with the sickest patients in intensive care.”
As a young man Stuart was attracted to Australia’s outdoors lifestyle and down to earth and ‘fair go’ culture and has made a home in the local area.
“The local community has a lot of resilience. They are often pretty tough as many don’t have it easy.”
He finds Nepean Hospital a very fulfilling place to work.
“The recent COVID emergency saw the hospital under extreme stress at times. Everyone responded and worked together extremely well. Watching the vaccination rate jump up locally renewed my faith and every hospital department came together very effectively and did a fantastic job with the resources they had.”
