Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) has appointed Dr. Kirsten Molloy as Board Chair, effective 1 January 2025. Dr Molloy, currently a valued member of the Board, will succeed Associate Professor Martin Cohen, who steps down after a successful tenure as Chair since 2021.
Recognising the contributions of Associate Professor Martin Cohen
During his tenure, A/Prof Martin Cohen has made significant contributions to the District, overseeing governance and accountability measures, driving improvements in patient outcomes, and guiding the organisation through the complexities of health service delivery.
His leadership has been instrumental in fostering strategic planning, responding to emerging health needs, and strengthening relationships with key public health stakeholders.
With a career rooted in psychiatry and academia, A/Prof Cohen has held various leadership positions including Deputy Commissioner for the NSW Mental Health Commission, Clinical Lead at Procare Mental Health Services, and Executive Director of the District’s mental health services. His commitment to advancing mental health services and improving governance frameworks has left a lasting legacy.
Reflecting on his time as Chair, A/Prof Cohen said: “It’s been a privilege to contribute to the vital work of Hunter New England Local Health District. Together, we’ve advanced our goals of patient-centered care and responsive health services. I have every confidence in Dr. Molloy’s ability to lead the Board and support the District’s continued success.”

Dr. Kirsten Molloy brings extensive leadership experience to her new role. With a career spanning executive positions in resources, manufacturing, and supply chain management, she is well-versed in governance, strategic planning, and organisational transformation.
Dr. Molloy holds a PhD and an MBA and is a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion, demonstrated through her work with Verity Leadership and the Hunter’s Equal Futures Project.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the role, Dr. Molloy said: “I’m honored to take on the role of Board Chair and contribute to the continued success of Hunter New England Local Health District. I look forward to working with the Board and District’s leadership team to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare to our communities.”
