N-S-E-W is a destination artwork which acknowledges the station’s role as a point of coming and going and its multidirectional arrivals and departures.
The history of movement embedded in the site is reflected in the mirrored surfaces of the sculpture, engaging the viewer and the surroundings in a constant and multi-layered conversation while its form evokes stacked sand grains from the ubiquitous sandstones of the Sydney Basin.
By using a unique two way mirror effect, the night time transformation of the sculpture appears as a glowing structure with a graphic design developed in consultation with Kamilaroi / Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding and is based upon the oxide patterns of these Sydney sandstones.
The work with Dennis was the result of a day walking, talking and looking at the oxide patterns in the sandstones. Dennis then developed an abstracted version of these markings which appear in the night time appearance of the sculpture
